AI Engineer, Internal Tools
Figma
San Francisco, Ca · remote · full time
$153,000 - $296,000
About the Role
Figma's Internal AI team, part of its Business Technology organization, helps employees safely adopt AI to improve their work. This role sits within the Applied AI Builds pillar, alongside Platform & Tooling and Infrastructure & Hosting.
Work directly with business teams to identify valuable AI opportunities, understand workflows, prototype approaches, evaluate results, and integrate solutions with enterprise systems and data. Own solutions through production and exercise judgment about when AI or traditional rules-based software is appropriate.
This is a full-time role available from Figma's US hubs, including San Francisco and New York, or remotely within the United States.
Responsibilities
- Partner with GTM, Finance, People, Legal, Support, and other teams to understand workflows and identify AI opportunities.
- Design, build, and productionize AI agents, assistants, and workflow automations using LLMs, tool calling, RAG, structured outputs, agent frameworks, MCP, APIs, and enterprise data.
- Integrate AI applications with enterprise systems, data sources, and internal APIs.
- Build evaluations and feedback loops to measure accuracy, reliability, and business impact before and after launch.
- Design deterministic guardrails, human-in-the-loop controls, and approval patterns for business-critical actions.
- Build production systems with observability, failure handling, security, authentication, authorization, and auditability.
- Develop reusable components and capabilities with Internal AI platform teams.
- Help define Applied AI engineering practices and scale AI adoption across Figma.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of software engineering experience building production applications, integrations, backend systems, or AI-powered products.
- Hands-on experience building applications with LLMs, agents, retrieval-augmented generation, function calling, schema-constrained outputs, or evaluation frameworks.
- Experience operating an AI application or workflow in production beyond the prototype stage.
- Strong API, integration, and system design fundamentals, including connecting multiple systems and data sources.
- Engineering judgment about when AI is appropriate versus a rules-based approach.
- Experience designing reliable production systems with observability, failure handling, authentication, authorization, and security controls.
- Experience working directly with non-engineering stakeholders to translate ambiguous business problems into technical solutions.
- Ability to move quickly from discovery to prototype while understanding safe, reliable productionization.
Preferred Qualifications
- Background building internal AI applications or working in Applied AI, Forward Deployed Engineering, or AI Solutions Engineering.
- Experience with MCP, agent orchestration frameworks, and enterprise tool-calling patterns.
- Knowledge of AWS Bedrock, AgentCore, OpenAI, Anthropic, or similar platforms.
- Experience integrating systems such as Salesforce, Zendesk, Workday, NetSuite, Greenhouse, or Slack.
- Knowledge of AI evaluations, observability, prompt/version management, and human-in-the-loop systems.
- Experience implementing enterprise identity and access patterns such as Okta, SSO, OAuth, and secure service-to-service authentication within Security, Privacy, SOX/ITGC, or other governance requirements.
Figma encourages applications from candidates whose experience does not align perfectly with every listed qualification.
