Lyft

San Francisco, Ca · hybrid · full time · Manager

$176,000 - $220,000

About the Role

The Business Travel team helps people who travel for work choose Lyft, and grows business travel as a line of business. Our customers include individual riders and the companies that offer Lyft as an employee benefit, spanning consumer and B2B products. Next, we want to make Lyft the most rewarding and reliable way to travel for work.

The team includes back-end, web, iOS, and Android engineers and works closely with product management, design, and data science. In this role, you’ll lead the team and its roadmap, own planning and delivery with your PM partner, guide technical direction through design reviews, and coach engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Drive team execution by resolving blockers, mediating decision-making, and navigating ambiguity to keep the team moving with clarity and momentum.
  • Maintain operational excellence by implementing and upholding best practices for observability, reliability, and on-call processes.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams — Product, Marketing, Science, and Analytics — to define the team's strategic direction and roadmap.
  • Ensure technical excellence through architecture reviews, proactive tech debt management, and hands-on engineering guidance.
  • Maintain team health by creating and refining team processes, fostering a supportive and inclusive culture, and managing resourcing needs.
  • Develop team member careers by matching them with opportunities, setting expectations, and delivering timely and actionable feedback.
  • Build relationships across engineering teams to share learnings, align on standards, and identify collaboration opportunities.
  • Translate business goals into clear engineering plans, helping the team understand the "why" behind their work.
  • Identify and address underperformance early, while recognizing individual strengths and contributions.
  • Contribute to hiring by partnering with recruiting, conducting interviews, and upholding the engineering bar.

Experience & Qualifications

  • B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 5 years of software development experience, with technical depth to engage credibly in architecture and design discussions.
  • At least 3 years of people management experience, with a demonstrated ability to grow engineers and build cohesive teams.
  • Proven track record of delivering projects end-to-end in a fast-paced environment, balancing speed with quality.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills working alongside Product, Design, Science, and Analytics.
  • Ability to operate effectively in ambiguity, decompose complex problems, and bring structure to the team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with senior stakeholders.
  • Experience managing backend, web, mobile, and/or data engineering roles is a plus.
  • Experience working on a growth-focused team or org (incentives, messaging, ads) is a plus.

This role is hybrid, requiring 3 days per week in-office (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays). Hybrid roles also offer flexibility to work from anywhere for up to 4 weeks per year.

Medical, dental, vision, mental health, family building, childcare, pet benefits, 401(k) with match, discretionary PTO, 12 holidays, 18 weeks paid parental leave, commuter benefits, monthly Lyft credits, and Lyft Pink.
