About Stripe

Stripe builds programmable financial infrastructure that helps businesses start and scale. More than 10 million businesses use its infrastructure.

Internship Overview

This selective software engineering internship is intended for current high school students graduating in 2027 or later, including students graduating before the internship begins. Candidates must demonstrate exceptional technical work and readiness to contribute to substantive engineering projects.

  • Work full-time, in person at Stripe’s San Francisco or Seattle office for 12 consecutive weeks between May and August 2027, during a mutually agreed period.
  • Remote participation, shorter internships, and breaks within the 12-week period are not permitted.
  • Own a scoped engineering problem end to end with support from a manager and teammates, contribute to Stripe’s codebase, and learn to build reliable systems.
  • Work alongside collegiate interns and full-time employees. This is not a classroom-based or trainee program.
  • Strong performance may lead to consideration for future opportunities, including full-time employment for eligible interns. Future opportunities are not guaranteed and depend on performance and hiring needs.
  • Compensation is $60 per hour.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in team discussions, decisions, and technical design.
  • Write, test, and document software intended for production use.
  • Give and receive technical feedback through code reviews and design discussions.
  • Collaborate with engineers and cross-functional partners to seek and incorporate feedback.
  • Learn unfamiliar systems through independent research and work with managers, mentors, teammates, and subject matter experts.
  • Clearly communicate progress, risks, open questions, and requests for help.
  • Use current AI development tools thoughtfully, exercising rigorous judgment to review, refine, test, and validate outputs.

Minimum Requirements

  • Be currently enrolled in high school or graduating from high school before the internship begins; the posting targets students graduating in 2027 or later.
  • Be available for the full in-person, 12-week internship period.
  • Have programming experience through projects, research, coursework, competitions, open source contributions, a startup, or another setting. Stripe primarily uses Ruby, Java, JavaScript, Go, and Scala; specific language knowledge is not required when programming fundamentals are strong.
  • Provide evidence of exceptional technical achievement for your stage, such as a substantial product, system, open source contribution, original research, startup work, or advanced competition performance.
  • Explain your individual contribution, technical decisions, tradeoffs, testing, feedback, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Have experience collaborating on a technical project and incorporating feedback.
  • Be able to learn unfamiliar systems through independent research and work with a mentor or subject matter expert.
  • Communicate clearly in writing and verbally.
  • Meet employment eligibility, minimum age, and documentation requirements for the role’s location by the start date. Final contract language is subject to Legal review.

Qualities Stripe Looks For

  • Ambition, initiative, and originality in building solutions to difficult technical problems.
  • Rigorous thinking, attention to correctness, testing assumptions, and examining edge cases.
  • Adaptability, quick learning, and progress under uncertainty.
  • Collaboration, kindness, clear communication, and judgment about when to work independently or ask for help.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deeper knowledge in one or more areas such as frontend, backend, infrastructure, data, machine learning, security, or developer tools, alongside strong programming fundamentals.
  • Experience writing high-quality pull requests, tests, technical documentation, or design notes.
  • Familiarity navigating unfamiliar codebases or contributing to multi-person projects.
  • Sustained technical work over time rather than only one-time awards or credentials.
  • Curiosity about business operations and software’s role in economic growth.

Application Materials

  • Submit a resume or short summary of technical experience.
  • Include one or two examples of your strongest work, such as a repository, live product, technical paper, research abstract, competition submission, or project write-up. Private work may be described without disclosing confidential material.
  • For each example, explain the problem, your personal contribution, the hardest technical decision, how you tested the work, and what you learned.
  • High school transcripts and standardized test scores are optional. There is no test score threshold.
