About Anthropic

Anthropic builds reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems intended to be safe and beneficial for users and society.

About the Role

As an Applied AI Architect on the Startups team, you will help founders and engineers build on the Claude Developer Platform, from early products through scale. You will combine technical expertise with a builder-first approach to architect LLM solutions, win technical evaluations, and help startups get the most out of Claude.

Working with Account Executives and Sales, Product, and Engineering teams, you will guide startups from technical discovery through deployment and expansion.

Responsibilities

  • Understand startup requirements, translate them into technical solutions, and serve as a trusted advisor throughout Claude adoption.
  • Win technical evaluations and help startups develop evaluation frameworks to measure Claude's performance for their use cases.
  • Build credibility with founders and engineering teams, understand their development patterns, and guide architecture decisions.
  • Identify emerging use cases and deployment patterns, and share customer insights with Product and Engineering.
  • Travel to customer sites, startup events, and industry conferences for workshops, technical deep dives, and relationship building.

Qualifications

Candidates may be a good fit with:

  • At least 3 years in technical customer-facing roles such as Solutions Architect, Sales Engineer, Forward Deployed Engineer, or technical founder conducting founder-led sales.
  • Experience with startups or high-growth technology companies and an understanding of early-stage constraints and velocity.
  • Software engineering or technical founder experience that establishes credibility with builders.
  • Deep proficiency in building and scaling AI products and familiarity with AI engineering best practices.
  • Hands-on experience building and deploying production LLM applications, including context engineering, evaluation frameworks, and modern AI architectures.
  • Strong technical communication skills and the ability to translate complex AI concepts into actionable insights.
  • A track record of selling technical products in competitive markets.
  • Comfort with Python and familiarity with common LLM frameworks, tools, and integration patterns.
  • Passion for making powerful technology safe and societally beneficial.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • A relevant field of study demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Location and Logistics

  • Locations: San Francisco, CA, or New York City, NY.
  • The posting designates this role as on-site. Anthropic's general hybrid policy expects staff in an office at least 25% of the time; some roles require more.
  • Visa sponsorship is available, though not guaranteed for every role or candidate. Anthropic makes reasonable efforts to secure a visa after an offer and retains an immigration lawyer.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Annual compensation range: $240,000–$315,000 USD.
  • For sales roles, the listed range represents on-target earnings, including annual base salary and target sales commissions or bonuses.
  • Benefits include optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and office space for collaboration.
