Senior Software Engineer II

Samsara

remote · full time · Senior

$154,700 - $260,000

About the Role

Join Samsara's In-Vehicle Experience team as a Senior Software Engineer. You'll be the technical leader of the team, setting the direction for what we build and how. We are building AI voice experiences that speak to, coach, and assist drivers as they work, spanning proactive assistance, on-demand interaction, and the range of situations in between. We are looking for the product-minded full-stack engineer who will figure out what those experiences should be, ship them, and build the systems that let them evolve into one coherent product rather than a set of disconnected tools.

You'll design what agents say and how they behave, build the services that support them, and iterate on both based on what drivers actually experience. AI-assisted engineering is central to this role; you will be expected to use modern AI engineering tools proficiently throughout the software development lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Define what to build and how to build it, shaping product direction from the engineering side.
  • Build and ship voice agent experiences from zero to one in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment.
  • Own the technical direction for how these experiences coordinate: context sharing, arbitrating concurrent interactions, and system resilience.
  • Make and document architectural tradeoffs where requirements are evolving, favoring foundations that generalize.
  • Serve as the team's technical anchor: review designs, unblock decisions, and mentor engineers.
  • Introduce new patterns for full-stack and AI-assisted engineering, and get the team using them.
  • Champion and embed Samsara's cultural principles as the company scales.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including ownership of products from concept through production.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Recent, primary experience shipping LLM/agent-based products end-to-end, including evaluation of AI behavior in production.
  • Experience with memory, context, or retrieval systems for AI applications (e.g., RAG pipelines, vector databases, long-lived session context).
  • Strong programming and design fundamentals (Go, TypeScript, Python).
  • Experience designing APIs and service boundaries that other systems rely on.
  • Experience setting technical direction on a team and mentoring other engineers.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to influence technical direction without formal authority.
  • Located in and authorized to work in the United States or Canada.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building zero-to-one products in fast-moving, high-autonomy environments.
  • Experience building persistent memory or personalization systems where agents learn about users over time.
  • Experience with multi-agent orchestration: coordinating multiple agents, avoiding conflicts, and maintaining consistency.
  • Experience building scheduling or arbitration systems.
  • Experience designing systems that combine structured and open-ended signal collection to inform product decisions.

Benefits

Offers a flexible employee-led remote model, comprehensive health and parental leave plans, professional development stipend, and an initial RSU equity grant with no vesting cliff plus ongoing refresh opportunities.
