About Gusto

Gusto supports more than 500,000 small businesses nationwide with payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR services.

About the Role and Team

Join the Financial Data & Payment Profile (FDPP) team within Gusto's Payments organization. The team owns the ledger, reconciliation, and financial reporting systems that account for money movement, along with the payment methods, bank connections, and verification state that determine how customers fund payroll and receive payments.

Guide projects end-to-end, make architectural decisions focused on scale and modularity, evolve existing systems toward desired end states, and maintain code powering core financial experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and test financial data systems, including ledgers, subledgers, transaction models, and reporting used by Accounting, Finance, Compliance, and partners.
  • Build reconciliation systems that compare internal records with bank, processor, and partner statements and make discrepancies traceable.
  • Lead variance investigations, including tooling, instrumentation, and runbooks that identify root causes and prevent recurring issues.
  • Own payment profiles, payment-method eligibility rules, bank accounts and connections, and verification state.
  • Build self-service setup and instant bank verification, handle broken or revoked connections gracefully, and provide clear recovery paths when account details or preferences change.
  • Help scale large Ruby on Rails and TypeScript/React applications.
  • Collaborate across Engineering, Product Management, Design, Data Science, Accounting, Finance, Compliance, and Operations on complex, ambiguous problems.
  • Mentor fellow engineers and help develop holistic, scalable solutions.

Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of experience and enthusiasm for a collaborative, test-driven environment.
  • Experience building fault-tolerant, mission-critical software and robust distributed systems using multiple general-purpose programming languages.
  • Experience influencing multiple teams on scaling, refactoring, and optimizing legacy products.
  • Experience architecting, building, and testing large-scale production code that is maintainable, structured, and well-documented.
  • Aptitude for bringing clarity and simplicity to complex, ambiguous problems.
  • Ability to communicate technical complexity and facilitate informed tradeoffs.
  • Comfort with double-entry accounting concepts, including journal entries, chart of accounts, debits and credits, and reconciling subledgers to the general ledger; ability to work with accountants and controllers using their terminology.
  • Experience building systems where correctness, auditability, and immutability take priority over raw throughput and silent data errors are especially consequential.

Preferred Experience

  • Ledger or subledger design, financial reconciliation, accounting systems, or payments infrastructure is strongly preferred.
  • Bank account verification, payment rails such as ACH, wire, and RTP, or third-party banking data and verification providers.
  • Ruby on Rails, TypeScript, and React.

Work Arrangement

  • Hybrid role based in New York, NY, or San Francisco, CA.
  • Office attendance is expected on designated days approximately 2–3 days per week, or more depending on the role. San Francisco office expectations include the San Jose metro area.
  • A secure, reliable, consistent internet connection is required when working outside a Gusto office, including hybrid non-office days.
  • Regular, predictable attendance and timely responsiveness are expected.
