Forward Deployed Engineer (SDEV)

PagerDuty

New York City, Ny · remote · full time · Staff

$145,000 - $218,900

Role

PagerDuty is seeking a Forward Deployed Engineer (SRE Agent) at Staff Engineer / SDE V level to join its customer-focused product engineering team. Work within strategic customer accounts to connect the SRE Agent to production environments and help teams progress from AI-assisted incident response to supervised and autonomous actions with safety guardrails. Contribute reusable tools, connectors, and capabilities directly to the core product.

Responsibilities

  • Work onsite and maintain regular contact with 2–4 strategic customer teams to deploy the SRE Agent, configure integrations, and embed AI actions across incident management workflows.
  • Scope, design, and build reusable agent tools, connectors, and capabilities through the product team's repositories, code review processes, and evaluation gates.
  • Pilot agentic capabilities with customers, gather evaluation data, identify blockers involving permissions, telemetry, and connectors, and ship production fixes.
  • Integrate with infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform and Pulumi, GitOps tooling such as Argo CD, CI/CD pipelines, and observability platforms.
  • Guide customers safely toward autonomous operations using progressive delivery and guardrails.
  • Define 3–6 month technical roadmaps across assigned accounts, provide architectural guidance, and bring customer feedback and evaluation findings to the core team.

Basic Qualifications

  • 8+ years building and shipping production software across team boundaries, assessed against Staff Engineer / SDE V expectations.
  • Hands-on production experience with LLM and agent systems, including agent development, tool-use frameworks such as MCP or equivalent, evaluation pipelines, and guardrail design.
  • Ability to lead technical design sessions with customer engineers and present business cases to customer leadership.
  • Comfort navigating ambiguous problems and unfamiliar environments, independently moving from vague requirements to working software.
  • A record of shipping adopted software and sound judgment about which customer requests generalize and when not to build.
  • Experience with Terraform or Pulumi at scale, GitOps using Argo CD or equivalent, CI/CD pipeline design, and progressive delivery patterns such as canary, blue/green, and soak periods.
  • Willingness to travel 25–50% during active customer engagements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Operational knowledge of incident management and observability, including on-call practices, postmortems, SLOs/SLIs, and alerting.
  • Customer-facing technical consulting, forward-deployed engineering, or solutions architecture experience alongside a software engineering background.
  • Founder or founding engineer experience involving ambiguity and unscripted problem-solving.
  • Experience with policy-as-code, fine-grained permissions, or safety guardrails for agent-driven automation.
  • Production experience with PagerDuty or competing digital operations and incident management platforms.
  • Active open-source contributions to the AI agent or MCP ecosystem.

Location and Travel

  • Listed as remote in the USA, with New York City, NY as the location.
