Software Engineer II (Kotlin) - Core Experience

About the Role

Adyen is looking for full-time Kotlin Engineers to help us develop our in-person payments solution. We have a large and varied fleet of payment terminals and payment SDKs in the field, continuously improved with new features and payment methods. Kotlin development plays a vital role in this effort, as your code will be deployed across our various solutions using Kotlin Multiplatform.

What You'll Do

• Build solutions for payment terminals and payment SDKs featuring card payments, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and QR code payments.
• Build and maintain payment features for global merchants.
• Integrate with a variety of cash registers using modern standards.
• Develop main business logic in Kotlin deployed on Android, Linux-based payment terminals, and backend systems.
• Contribute to C++ libraries central to payment business logic.
• Write tests ranging from unit testing to complete product testing via automated programmable robots.

Qualifications

Must Have

• 5+ years of experience writing code in Kotlin.
• Proficiency in building software for the Android platform.
• Experience in the development of enterprise-level SDKs.
• Expert-level knowledge of Kotlin, Android SDK, Jetpack Compose, Coroutines, Gradle, and Dependency Injection.
• Experience writing and maintaining automated unit and integration tests.
• High personal accountability, strong technical skills, creative problem-solving, and a collaborative spirit.
• Ability and desire to mentor and grow other engineers through code reviews, design reviews, and debugging.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

Nice to Have

• Experience in another non-JVM language, such as C or C++.
• Experience building libraries used by other engineers.
• Knowledge of security best practices and standards.
• Experience working with Bluetooth-connected devices.
• Experience working in the payment industry.

Additional Details

• Work Arrangement: Office-first company based out of Chicago; remote-only roles are not offered.
• Visa Requirements: Must be work authorized in the US without the need for new visa sponsorship (visa transfers can be supported; no H-1B CAP sponsorship).
