Senior Data Science Manager, Growth

Gusto seeks a hands-on people manager to lead a data science and analytics team supporting Growth product initiatives. The role combines team leadership with direct analytical work, partnering with Product, Engineering, Design, Marketing, Sales, and Finance to inform strategy, improve user experiences, and accelerate growth.

Responsibilities

• Hire, empower, coach, and develop data scientists, setting high standards for analytical quality and career growth.
• Partner with Product and cross-functional leaders to identify opportunities, prioritize investments, and influence long-term product roadmaps.
• Define key metrics and scale measurement frameworks and monitoring systems for product initiatives, including AI-powered features.
• Support inferential analyses and experimentation, including A/B tests, segmentation, funnel analysis, and evaluations of AI- and ML-driven systems.
• Collaborate with ML Engineering and Product on personalization, predictions, and intelligent automation, grounding features in customer insight and measuring real-world impact.
• Perform hands-on analysis, review and refine analytical work, and ensure insights are technically sound and business-relevant.
• Communicate recommendations and trade-offs to senior leadership to shape executive decisions.

Qualifications

• At least 10 years of experience in data science or related fields, including at least 4 years managing and scaling high-performing data science teams.
• Deep product analytics expertise, including user acquisition, activation, retention, engagement, or expansion in SaaS or product-led environments.
• Advanced coding skills, strong statistical reasoning, familiarity with experimentation frameworks, and the ability to mentor data scientists on best practices.
• Experience at the intersection of data science and AI product development, with comfort reasoning about model behavior, evaluation design, and deployment trade-offs in customer-facing contexts.
• Strategic and business acumen, with demonstrated ability to connect insights to business goals and influence roadmaps through data.
• Proven executive communication skills, including presenting complex insights as clear, actionable recommendations.
• A history of cross-functional collaboration with Product, Engineering, and go-to-market teams.
• Hands-on experience with ML applications in product contexts, such as personalization, churn prediction, customer segmentation, or LLM-powered features, is strongly preferred.
• Familiarity with multi-product SaaS ecosystems and customer lifecycle analytics is desirable.

AI Expectations

All team members are expected to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their roles and develop their fluency as the technology evolves. Role-specific AI experience is assessed during interviews.

Locations and Work Expectations

• Hybrid in Denver, CO; New York, NY; or San Francisco, CA.
• Employees based in these locations are expected in the office on designated days approximately 2–3 days per week, or more depending on the role. San Francisco office expectations also cover the San Jose metro area.
• A secure, reliable, consistent internet connection is required when approved to work outside an office, including hybrid non-office days.
• Regular, predictable attendance and timely responsiveness to colleagues, customers, and stakeholders are expected.

Compensation and Benefits

• Denver cash compensation target: $185,000–$217,000.
• San Francisco and New York cash compensation target: $218,000–$255,000.
• Final offers depend on experience, expertise, and other factors and may vary from these amounts.
