Software Engineer, Product

About the Role

Product engineering at Descript means owning outcomes, not just tickets — you'll take a problem from a rough idea to a shipped, measured result, working closely with product, design, and the rest of engineering along the way.

Teams include:

• Editor: owns our video editor. Help make traditionally complex video-editing workflows simpler, craft cutting-edge AI into practical creative tools, and build on our vision of turning a text-editor for video into a tool that puts video in everyone's communication toolkit.
• Growth & Monetization: owns onboarding and activation, growth loops and in-product experiments, plans and pricing, checkout, billing, and AI credits.
• Media: owns upload, transcription, diarization, alignment, drive-wide search, playback, rendering, and export (including an engine rewritten in Rust).
• Agent: owns Underlord, Descript's AI co-editor. Build the representations, tools, harness, evals, and feedback loops that let it reason about video projects, make edits, and check its work.
• Identity & Access (TACO): owns login, authentication and authorization, account settings, project organization, workspaces, SSO/SCIM, governance, and audit logs.

What You’ll Do

• Own meaningful product surfaces end to end: from definition through design, implementation, launch, measurement, and maintenance.
• Shape the product, partnering with Product and Design to propose better interactions, expose constraints, choose the right metrics, and find simpler paths to user outcomes.
• Build ambitious full-stack systems with care, spanning TypeScript, React, Node.js, Temporal, and integrations.
• Improve how the team learns and ships by forming hypotheses, instrumenting work, releasing incrementally, and strengthening testing, observability, and release practices.
• Raise the team’s technical ambition through architectural direction, code reviews, mentoring, and clear writing.

What You Bring

Required

• 5+ years of experience building and shipping customer-facing products, including end-to-end features that measurably improved user or business outcomes.
• Effectively leverage agents to multiply your impact and think critically about how to better harness AI in your work.
• Proven ownership of features/experiments end to end, leveraging analytics and metrics to evaluate impact.
• Ability to orient quickly in unfamiliar systems by exploring and asking thoughtful questions.
• Care for software feel and user experience.
• Ability to create clarity in ambiguous work and navigate product and technical complexity.
• Rigorous validation through reproductions, logs, tests, and evidence.

Preferred / Experience that helps

• Work on an editor, media product, creative tool, or payment system (like Stripe).
• Familiarity with our stack: TypeScript, HTML/CSS, React, Redux, Node.js, API design, Temporal Workflows, and SQL (plus Rust).
• Experience crafting with AI, building agents, or experimenting with media-generation models.
• Experimentation and product analytics experience.
• Understanding of video intricacies: shaders, graphics rendering, audio/visual effects, and media formats.
