Salary not specified

Role

SpaceX is seeking a new graduate mechanical engineer to support infrastructure for power generation and supercompute at Starbase under the Starship program. The role covers mechanical work from concept through design, fabrication, construction, and commissioning, including power generation, fluid and cooling systems, structures, and production equipment. You will work across engineering, construction, and operations to deliver hardware that performs in the field.

Responsibilities

  • Develop design concepts and size infrastructure systems based on operational loads, site conditions, and facility operations.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to balance cost, schedule, reliability, and capability.
  • Create detailed designs, CAD models, and prints for components, assemblies, and site integration.
  • Build analysis models to assess designs and verify system needs.
  • Use first-order hand calculations and empirical formulas to rapidly assess and iterate designs.
  • Support validation using development hardware, mockups, first articles, and testing of critical joints, components, and design elements.
  • Support testing and commissioning of subsystems and full installations.
  • Partner with construction teams, build engineers, and technicians to improve designs and resolve build and installation issues.
  • Support hardware installation in the field and observe systems being built, commissioned, and placed into service.
  • Participate in design reviews and transition designs into installed hardware.

Basic Qualifications

  • Graduating in 2026 or 2027 with a bachelor's degree, master's degree, or PhD in an engineering discipline or physics.
  • At least 1 year of mechanical design, analysis, build, or test experience through project teams, research, internships, and/or professional experience.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Coursework or projects in mechanical design, structural analysis, fluids, thermal systems, or power and cooling equipment.
  • Experience with CAD and hand calculations or analysis tools such as NASTRAN, ABAQUS, ANSYS, Python, MATLAB, or Excel.
  • Strong ability to use data and analysis to make fast decisions.
  • Ability to perform trade studies and make clear recommendations using first principles and engineering fundamentals, including with partial information.
  • Experience in a nimble engineering organization or highly technical role requiring resourcefulness and an entrepreneurial approach under tight time or budget constraints.
  • Exceptional achievement in competitive engineering, mathematics, or science environments, academic testing, or other intellectual pursuits.
  • Hardware-building experience or enthusiasm for contributing to real-world products.
  • Demonstrated success in multiple simultaneous endeavors.
  • Evidence of rapid growth, increasing responsibility, and quickly mastering difficult work early in a career.
  • Resilience and ability to overcome failure or significant obstacles.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.
  • Ability and willingness to relocate to Starbase, Texas, in the Brownsville area.
  • Stand, walk, and reach overhead for up to 3 hours per day each; sit for up to 6 hours per day.
  • Push or pull up to 50 pounds unassisted for up to 15 minutes per day.
  • Lift or carry up to 25 pounds unassisted for up to 15 minutes per day.
  • Climb ladders or stairs for up to 1 hour per day.
  • Work in temperatures above 80 degrees for up to 30 minutes per day.
  • Safely work at heights up to 500 feet, in confined spaces, and while using an air-purifying respirator, and perform the listed physical requirements.
  • Candidates may need to complete a pre-employment questionnaire and/or physical, potentially including a medical history review, to confirm these capabilities.
