Chime
New York, Ny · hybrid · full time · Senior
$164,000 - $259,000
About the Role
Chime’s Lending org builds the products and platforms that give members access to fair, transparent credit and liquidity when they need it most, from Earned Wage Access through MyPay, to flexible overdraft with SpotMe, to longer-term Instant Loans, and the platforms that power credit decisions, funding, repayments, and servicing behind the scenes.
As a Senior Software Engineer in Lending, you’ll work at the seam between member-facing products and the platforms that make them possible. You’ll lead technical initiatives that cut across products, platforms, and partner teams, designing and building backend systems where correctness, reliability, speed, and operational rigor matter deeply.
Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end architecture and delivery of backend systems that connect member-facing lending products with shared platforms such as Credit Risk, Capital Markets, Repayments, servicing, and core financial systems.
- Drive complex, cross-team initiatives from problem definition through architecture, implementation, rollout, and iteration.
- Own technical problems with real business and member impact, bringing structure, momentum, and clarity.
- Define and evolve APIs, integration patterns, and data contracts to enable velocity without compromising safety or correctness.
- Design for scale, resiliency, observability, and operational excellence, including failure handling, retries, reconciliation, and auditability.
- Identify opportunities to turn product needs into reusable platform capabilities.
- Partner with Product, Design, Risk, Data Science, Analytics, Finance, and Operations teams.
- Participate in on-call rotations and incident response, driving post-incident improvements.
- Mentor engineers through design reviews, feedback, and technical partnership.
- Contribute to roadmap and strategy conversations.
Qualifications
Required
- 8+ years of experience building and operating production software at scale, owning backend systems end-to-end.
- Strong backend engineering fundamentals, ideally with Ruby on Rails or a comparable framework, and experience building APIs and distributed systems in production.
- Experience with transactional databases, asynchronous processing, caching, and large-scale application architecture.
- Strong system design judgment across correctness, scalability, resiliency, speed, and maintainability.
- Track record of leading complex technical projects spanning multiple teams or systems.
- Experience in fintech, lending, banking, payments, risk, or other high-integrity domains.
- High-ownership mindset and ability to operate in ambiguity.
- Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Experience mentoring engineers and raising engineering quality bars.
Preferred
- Experience with lending or credit systems (underwriting, eligibility, line assignment, repayments, servicing, decisioning).
- Experience with financial platform domains (capital markets workflows, reconciliations, ledgering, bank/partner integrations).
- Familiarity with experimentation, analytics, and data-informed systems.
- Experience helping teams adopt shared platform capabilities through APIs, abstractions, and internal tooling.
Benefits
Comprehensive health, financial, and wellbeing benefits, generous vacation and paid days off, backup child/elder/pet care, subsidized commuter benefits, annual wellness stipend, family planning reimbursement, and up to 22 weeks paid parental leave.
