Staff Machine Learning Engineer, Assistance Engineering

About the Role

Airbnb's Assistance Engineering Machine Learning team drives Customer Support x Artificial Intelligence (CSxAI) initiatives using generative AI to deliver intelligent, scalable customer service. The team develops AI models, ML services, and tools spanning LLM fine-tuning and optimization, RAG/search, LLM evaluation, test automation, feedback-based learning, and guardrails.

As a Staff Machine Learning Engineer, you will build and apply cutting-edge AI technologies to deliver personalized, easy-to-use, proactive customer service for guests and hosts. Many initiatives are in early conceptual stages, offering opportunities to shape ideas from inception through production.

Responsibilities

• Envision, champion, and support novel ML systems, product integrations, and performance optimizations that solve real-world problems.
• Collaborate with product, design, and engineering counterparts to design and build efficient AI solutions for Airbnb customer service products.
• Learn and share the latest AI/ML technologies with the team.

Qualifications

• PhD or master's degree, preferably in Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
• At least 9 years of ML engineering experience, including ownership of large-scale software systems.
• Background designing and developing AI and ML systems and services, with a strong passion for efficient, scalable ML-powered products.
• Experience with LLM-driven chatbots and agentic AI products is a significant plus.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate within and across engineering, product, and design teams.

Location

• US remote eligible; listed location is San Francisco, California.
• Occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites may be required as agreed with your manager.

Compensation

• Annual base pay range: $212,000–$260,000 USD.
• Actual base pay depends on training, transferable skills, experience, business needs, and market demands. The range may change.
• The role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
