Fastly

San Francisco, Ca · hybrid · full time

$155,370 - $186,444

About the Role

Fastly is looking for a full-stack Software Engineer to join the Platform Observability and Intelligence (POI) team. The POI team is responsible for Fastly's internal observability stack (Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, OpenTelemetry), developer portal (Backstage), and internal network and cost analytics tools.

This is a generalist, mid-level role focused on contributing to the observability stack and developer portal, with opportunities to work across our full platform.

What You'll Do

  • Design, build, and maintain platform software powering Fastly’s internal observability functions and developer experience.
  • Contribute to the development of the internal developer portal built on Backstage, enabling service discovery, documentation, and tooling access.
  • Break down requirements into concrete tasks and take ownership of delivery from start to finish.
  • Debug and resolve complex issues across the stack, from datacenter hardware to the browser.
  • Communicate status, progress, and blockers clearly; write clean PR descriptions and documentation.
  • Collaborate through code reviews and knowledge sharing across engineering teams.
  • Participate constructively in agile planning, rituals, and retrospectives.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to respond to incidents within team SLAs.

Qualifications

Required

  • 2+ years of professional software engineering experience with limited oversight.
  • Experience in a modern statically typed back-end language (such as Go, Java, or Rust).
  • Experience with modern front-end frameworks (such as React) or a willingness to learn.
  • Experience with SQL and database-driven applications.
  • Experience working with Linux systems and shell scripting.
  • Experience working with distributed systems or cloud-based services.
  • Comfort working across large, unfamiliar, and open-source codebases.
  • Methodical debugging and problem-solving skills.

Preferred

  • Experience with Backstage or other internal developer portal frameworks.
  • Experience with enterprise observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, Datadog, ELK, OpenTelemetry).
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP), container orchestration (Kubernetes), or IaC tools (Terraform, Ansible, Chef).
  • Knowledge of FinOps, capacity planning, cost modeling, data engineering, or data science.
  • Understanding of datacenter infrastructure, physical servers, and network protocols.
  • Experience teaching, mentoring, or creating documentation for internal tooling.

Interview Policy

The use of AI technologies (real-time transcription tools, automated scripts, AI copilots, or external assistants) is strictly prohibited during the interview process unless authorized in advance.

Benefits

Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, 401(k) with company match, ESPP, flexible vacation, up to 18 accrued sick days, 12 paid holidays, 12 wellness days, family planning, and mental health support.
