Staff Software Engineer, Billing Agents

Commure

Mountain View, Ca · hybrid · full time · Staff

$210,000 - $275,000

About the Role

At Commure, we are building the AI Operating System for healthcare. You will build AI-native software that makes medical billers dramatically more productive. Our team, Air Billing, is behind the highest-traffic surfaces in our practice management product: claims, appointments, and payments posting.

We are mid-way through a generational rebuild of these surfaces, and of the frontend and backend architecture beneath them. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will set the technical direction for that rebuild across multiple teams. Our stack is React 19 / TypeScript on the frontend and Python/FastAPI + PostgreSQL on the backend, with a columnar warehouse for analytics.

What You’ll Do

  • Set technical direction for the biller-workflow platform (frontend and backend architecture) and drive adoption across the RCM engineering org.
  • Establish engineering standards and patterns: component and design-system conventions, data-fetching and API contracts, testing, and observability practices.
  • Lead cross-cutting technical problems end to end: data-dense tables at scale, idempotent queue-backed bulk operations, unified claim activity timelines, and embedding AI where it eliminates friction.
  • Ensure engineering excellence through architecture reviews, deep code reviews, and cross-team mentorship.
  • Own reliability and performance in production, including render/query performance and pipeline health.
  • Partner with product, design, and billing operations to translate complex billing workflows into robust software.

What You Have

  • 8+ years building large-scale, full-stack applications, setting technical direction across multiple teams.
  • Org-wide frontend leadership, including driving adoption of design systems or shared component architectures and diagnosing React rendering bottlenecks in data-dense UIs.
  • Strong API and data-layer design experience, establishing conventions for REST endpoints and optimizing queries.
  • Proven track record leading multi-month, multi-team migrations or platform rebuilds.
  • Deep expertise in TypeScript, React, Python, and PostgreSQL.
  • Strong instincts for debugging, monitoring, logging, and observability.
  • Excellent communication and alignment skills with an ownership mindset.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with analytical/OLAP datastores (ClickHouse, StarRocks, Druid).
  • Familiarity with healthcare billing data (EDI X12, clearinghouses, ERAs/EOBs, denial codes).
  • Experience shipping LLM-powered features into production workflows.
  • Experience with developer tooling and CI/CD pipelines for frontend applications.
  • Experience working in regulated industries (healthcare, finance, insurance).
