Director, Growth Engineering
Chime
San Francisco, Ca · hybrid · full time · Director
$269,000 - $373,000
About the role
Growth is how millions of people find Chime, set up direct deposit, transact every day, unlock all the features and benefits Chime offers, and keep coming back. The Growth Platform is the engine behind it: Web, Paid, Notifications, Incentives, Targeting, Experimentation and Personalization, all used by every Growth team at Chime. We're looking for a Director to lead this org and build what comes next: a platform where AI and ML decide what each member sees, when, and on which channel, and where AI agents design, run, and learn from experiments on their own.
Responsibilities
- Lead the Growth Platform org, managing tech lead managers (TLMs) and senior engineers across Web, Paid, Notifications, Incentives, Targeting, Experimentation, and Personalization. Report to the VP of Growth Engineering.
- Set the multi-year vision and roadmap. Turn seven separate systems into one connected growth platform with shared member data, decisioning, and measurement.
- Make the platform AI-native and agentic. Leverage ML and GenAI in targeting, bidding, content, incentives, and send-time optimization. Invest in agentic flows, starting with self-learning experiment agents.
- Help Growth teams ship faster by making it easy to launch, target, personalize, and measure changes independently.
- Partner closely with Product, Marketing, Data Science/ML, and Analytics leaders to align on strategy and tie bets to core metrics: direct deposits, retention, and acquisition efficiency.
- Hire, coach, and grow tech lead managers who balance technical hands-on ownership with leadership.
- Keep platforms reliable, cost-efficient, and compliant in partnership with Risk, Compliance, and Privacy.
Requirements
- 10+ years in software engineering, including 5+ years leading teams and at least 2 years managing managers/TLMs.
- Proven track record building large-scale growth or marketing platforms (e.g., experimentation, targeting, messaging, incentives/rewards, paid attribution, or personalization).
- Hands-on experience shipping ML-powered systems for real-time decisions (ranking, uplift models, bandits) and production LLM-based agents or agentic workflows.
- Deep experimentation and measurement expertise.
- Strong distributed systems and data architecture judgment (real-time event pipelines, feature stores, low-latency decisioning, high-volume messaging).
- Clear executive communication with a history of cross-functional buy-in.
Bonus Qualifications
- Experience in fintech or regulated industries.
- Experience in paid acquisition/mobile measurement.
- Experience leading large platform migrations.
Benefits
Comprehensive health, financial, and wellbeing benefits; 4-day in-office/Fridays WFH hybrid setup; backup child/elder/pet care; subsidized commuter benefits; generous vacation; annual wellness stipend; up to 22 weeks paid parental leave; and family planning reimbursement.
