Staff Software Engineer, Native Mobile

Role Overview

Coinbase is hiring a Staff Software Engineer, Native Mobile to join the App Infra team within the Consumer & Business group and help lead a greenfield native mobile app rewrite. The team is replacing the existing React Native app with native Swift and Kotlin builds, utilizing AI-driven agentic workflows to translate and rebuild every core surface for millions of customers. This role will bring deep iOS or Android expertise to set the technical bar, own quality outcomes, and translate organizational strategy into execution as product teams onboard to native.

Coinbase is a remote-first company with quarterly in-person working sessions called "surges."

What You'll Do

• Own the architecture of core native app surfaces in Swift and Kotlin, defining module boundaries, responsibilities, visibility rules, and compile-time checks.
• Stay hands-on across codebases, writing and reviewing code in depth.
• Lead the agentic code translation workflow, implementing automated systems for recurring migration work and determining what gets automated versus human-reviewed.
• Own developer experience for the native codebase by improving build speeds, local development workflows, and CI/CD reliability.
• Shape the dual-app agentic synchronization strategy during the transition to keep native and React Native codebases in sync.
• Lead and mentor L3-L5 mobile engineers across teams and define mobile development best practices.

Required Skills and Experience

• 8+ years of iOS or Android mobile software engineering experience (Swift/iOS or Kotlin/Android), with working proficiency in the other platform and willingness to develop cross-platform fluency across both iOS and Android.
• Track record of shipping high-quality mobile applications at scale with ownership of architecture decisions, performance budgets, and release quality.
• Deep understanding of mobile performance optimization (cold start, frame stability, scroll jank, time to interaction) and profiling across device tiers, including low-end Android.
• Demonstrated ability to translate organizational strategy into team-level execution and build cross-functional alignment.
• Experience with AI-assisted code generation or LLM-driven development workflows, with judgment on automation vs. human review.
• Experience improving developer experience through build systems, CI/CD pipelines, and release tooling.
• Commitment to responsible generative AI usage with human oversight.
